BLACK MADONNA SANCTUARY IN CZESTOCHOWA, DAY TOUR FROM KRAKOW
The Jasna Gora Monastery in Czestochowa, 120km north of Krakow is a Pauline Fathers monastery, the holiest place in Poland and one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in the world. Polish culture and history have always been inseparably connected to Catholic religion and the pilgrimage tradition to this very symbolical and spiritual place dates back to the 16th century. Every year several million pilgrims come here to pray before a miraculous icon depicting the Mother of God with the Christ Child. Many of them travel very long distances on foot.
This icon is known as the Black Madonna of Czestochowa or Our Lady of Czestochowa. For ages the faithful have believed that St. Luke the Evangelist himself painted the divine icon on a tabletop once used by the Holy Family. It is widely venerated and credited with many miracles, for example with saving the Jasna Gora monastery from the Swedish 17th century invasion, The Deluge, which actually changed the course of the war. This event led Jan Kazimierz, the King of Poland to crown Our Lady of Czestochowa as Queen and Protector of the lands in his kingdom.
Over the centuries a great number of worshippers have had their prayers heard and, grateful, left innumerable votive offerings displayed in the sanctuary.
On the way back to Krakow we will take you along the Eagles' Nests Trail, a historic strategic system of castles and watchtowers that once protected Poland's southern frontiers. Today most of the castles are in ruins, but you will see some that have endured - like Pieskowa Skala. This 14th century fortress was turned into a beautiful Renaissance residence during the 16th century. Today it is home to the Museum of the National Wawel Art Collections. Nearby is a famous rock formation called Hercules' Club, a natural, 25-meter limestone column characteristic of the Ojcow National Park in which the whole area is located.
