JEWISH KRAKOW & SCHINDLER'S LIST PRIVATE TOUR

While visiting Krakow it's impossible to skip the magical and historical Jewish district of Kazimierz. It is named after its royal founder, King Casimir the Great, who founded it as a separate town in 1335 and it is best known for being home to a Jewish community from the 14th century until the World War II. In 1791 it lost its status as a separate city and became a district of Krakow, but the abundance of markets, synagogues and Jewish cemeteries shaped the character of this part of town. And it's because of its Jewish face that Kazimierz flourishes so much nowadays.

The character of this district changed dramatically with the World War II when the occupying Nazis forced the Jewish inhabitants to live in appalling conditions within the Jewish ghetto, established just outside of original Kazimierz. As a consequence of the Holocaust two thirds of the residents of Kazimierz were killed during the liquidation of the ghetto or in the extermination camps.

Walking around Kazimierz you can easily recognize various places in which certain scenes from Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List" were shot, and among them the famous enamel factory. Oskar Schindler was an opportunistic businessman who gained ownership of a factory in Krakow to manufacture enamelware for the German army. He used Jews as his labour force. But as the war progressed and he witnessed the horrifying visions of the Holocaust, his motivations switched from pure profit to human sympathy and he turned his factory into a refuge for Jews. To more than 1,100 Jews, the workers he referred to as "my children", Schindler was all that stood between them and death at the hands of the Nazis and he managed to keep them alive.

After the war, Kazimierz became a backwater area with a reputation for being unsafe at night.
However, it is now undergoing a major renaissance, with a popular annual Jewish Cultural Festival re-introducing the Jewish culture both to Poles and to tourists. Many important historic sites have been restored and innumerable Jewish-themed restaurants, bars, bookstores and souvenir shops are adding to the charm of Kazimierz.
